  3. member of Parliament for Northampton, but was
  4. not allowed to take his seat until 1886
  5. because, as an atheist, he (unsuccessfully)
  6. claimed the right to affirm instead of taking
  7. the oath. He was associated with the feminist
  8. Annie Besant. He served in the army, was a
  9. lawyer's clerk, became well known as a
  10. speaker and journalist under the name of
  11. Iconoclast, and from 1860 ran the National
  12. Reformer. He advocated the freedom of the
  13. press, contraception, and other social
  14. reforms.
